The Warlords plan
to run a game of Pearl Harbour at Salute Zero Five.
Below are shots of the planning stages of the game, but first, a word from David
Barnes, the game's creator:
The first intention
was to build the land from 3mm ply laid on a blue cloth. Unfortunately the ply
still warped and so would not sit on a cloth. Therefore in came the 18mm mdf to
form the base that the ply would then have to be glued to. Here are the five separate
sheets measuring 6ft x 5 ft in total laid out on my kitchen floor. The ground
plan had previously been photocopied from a book onto an acetate sheet. Projected
onto a large piece of paper and adjusted for scale and then transferred onto the
ply for cutting
The first few
pieces of the land cut from 3mm ply were laid out to make sure that the idea
was workable. Ford Island in the middle is 95% finished.
With some of the land in place an image began to form of the finished display.
Lots of buildings had to be cut out and painted, roads to be done and landscaping
still ahead.
One of the pictures
I've taken shows the view towards the submarine yard across from the large oil
storage farm (containers courtesy of Mainly Military) and another shows (a slightly
blurry close up of) the Navy Yard demonstrating the amount of 'kit' in dock
that morning. Talk about "target rich environment".
The last shots
below show the land which is now cut and the harbour in the background looking
from the narrow channel from the ocean. Alsopresent are some of the shots taken
as background for the show programme of the 1/48th scale planes - a Kate, a
Zero and a Val - all by Nichimo.

Below are shots of
the table area in production.
Bottom right shows the land painted green (another coat needed on one board).
CinPac (the backward 'C' shaped building in place, HQ for Pacific Fleet). A few
other buildings put down for effect. The grey area begins to define the harbour
and repair facilities. In the top left are some buildings to show the position
of Pearl City.
Below are some plane
shots and the island and boats.
